some.information

There are several options in Nairobi where one can find accomodation during their internship. In the following, you find a list of recommended places where former interns already stayed and gave a clean bill of health to. In general, you can choose whether you want to live downtown or in one of the estates near the UN compound like Gigiri, Muthaiga and Westlands. Where you prefer to stay depends on your personal preferences. If you decide to stay downtown be aware that you have to take the shuttle to the UN in the morning which usually takes about 30 min or a matatu.

China Garden:

Situated directly beside the UN-Compound in Gigiri this place used to be highly frequented by interns. Usually the appartments consist of 2 bedrooms, bath, living room and kitchen. The kitchen is well equiped and the living room has a TV. With monthly 500$ for the whole appartment the prices are relatively high. Therefore, more and more interns prefer to find a cheaper and more pleasant place and therefore share a private house. Nevertheless, China Garden is a good place to go if you are new in Nairobi before you start looking for alternative accommodation.

Heron Court Hotel:

Is situated on Milimani Road and rents out apartments on a monthly basis but has recently increased the prices. Besides that, the Hotel is really nice, with a decent pool, and the food in the restaurant is quite good – if you never expect to actually get exactly what you’ve ordered!

Eagle Apartments:

Located on the same road as Heron Hotel

TEL :(254) 20 – 2719060, PHYSICAL ADDRESS : Milimani/Ralph Bunche Rd

Both Heron Hotel and Eagle Apartments are close to Serena Hotel, where the ‘UN Intern Shuttle’ leaves every day (only you can never rely on when exactly it will pass there!)

Gemina Court:

Is a bit on the "wrong side" of town in the sense that it is far away from UN and one has no direct access to the the ‘UN Intern Shuttle’ BUT it is a grand place in a nice setting and really close to the Yaya-Centre, where you can do your shopping!

German School:

It is located opposite the Village Market (a favourite hang-out for ‘Wazungu’ = ‘white people’) and very close to the UN compound in Gigiri. It has a boarding house, which offers double rooms on a ‘full board’ basis. The advantage of living at the school is that you can use all their facilities: football field, tennis court, basketball field, swimming pool, internet etc.

Private Apartments and Guest Houses

Probably one of the best places to stay is situated between UN-Compound and Village Market. The Village Market is a walking distance from the UN Complex and provides you with everything you need for your daily life.
