You have probably heard or read of the high crime rates and the dangers of living in Nairobi. Of course, risks do exist, but they can be minimized. Here is a short list of general advise for walking through the city:
-
Avoid flashing your valuables as most of the robberies are as a result of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. So don’t create opportunities.
-
Don’t carry more valuables/money than you will need. When encountering muggers, remain calm and give them what they ask for as it is not worth your life!
-
Probably the best thing to do if you are new in Nairobi, is to find some locals, maybe some fellow interns, to show you around so that you can get in touch with the city.
-
Avoid going out alone after dark, because the streets get deserted very fast. At night, please take a taxi if you must travel.
-
There is a possibility that sooner or later you will be approached by some people who want you to go on safari, if you feel bothered . Don’t feel threatened as they usually don't intend to harm you.
-
Most situations can be managed with a friendly smile, a decisive "not interested" and an exchange of jokes.
