Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The world-renowned Ngorongoro Crater is just a part of the strikingly beautiful Crater Highlands. The entire NCA covers about 8300 sqkm and comprises Olduvai Gorge, alkaline lakes Ndutu and Masek and a long string of volcanoes and calderas (collapsed volcanic craters), most of which are inactive

Geologically, the craters in the Conservation are part of the Rift Valley fault system. The Rift expands at a small pace to the end of a new ocean separating the Horn of Africa from the African continent within the next millions of years. This process continues to cause volcanism, hot springs and small earthquakes all over the Rift Valley area.

Ngorongoro Crater is a world heritage site and has a diameter of about 10-12 miles with 600m high crater rims, creating a natural amphitheatre for one of the densest population of animals anywhere.

It is a microcosm of the vast Serengeti National Park and in one day it is possible to see a staggering array of East African wildlife, including all the big carnivores. The most comfortable way of getting there is by driving on a very good road from Arusha. Accomodation can be found in Karatu, for example on the "Bush camp Karatu" campsite.
